It has been found that the fruit of mugua has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and astringent properties and can aid in digestion. A decoction can be used internally in the treatment of nausea, joint pains, cholera and associated cramps. For implementation of quality control, Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2020 has released the assay of oleanolic acid and ursonic acid of the herbal plant.
