Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats) Against Virusses

What are Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats)

Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats) are membrane-active agents well known for their efficacy against bacteria, fungi, algae, and enveloped viruses. Quats are suited for a wide range of pharmaceutical applications that require high purity and quality, such as vaccine production and as preservatives (excipients) or active ingredients (APIs) in many ophthalmic, nasal, oral and topical drugs and in a variety of solutions, ointments, gels, and creams.

What is Benzalkonium Chloride?

In the mode of action, the cationic ‘headgroup’ of BKC is progressively adsorbed to the negatively charged phosphate heads of phospholipids in the lipid bilayer and subsequently increases in concentration. The consistent increase of BKC concentration results in reduced membrane fluidity, creating hydrophilic gaps in the membrane. Multiple studies have reported on the virucidal effect of BKC against coronaviruses

Applications

Wound care and medical devices

Regardless of the classification, for medical devices coming into contact with either healthy or damaged organic tissue, it is necessary to utilize only the purest and safest ingredients.

Nasal Sprays

In nasal formulation one of the most effective preservatives is BKC. For formulations coming into contact with mucosal tissue, it is necessary to preserve against ontamination by utilizing only the purest and safest ingredients

Ophthalmics

Benzalkonium Chloride is widely used as an excipient in ophthalmic solutions, gels and ointments, where its concentration typically varies from 0.001% up to 0.2%. The different alkyl (fatty) chain lenghts give Quats different properties.

Oral Products

Quats can be used either as excipients or active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for oral and dental formulations. No matter the application it is necessary to utilize only the purest and safest ingredients.

Topical Products

Our Quats products are widely used in both human and veterinary topicals. Quats are effective at all pH levels and since they act on the surface and not on the content of cells, they do not trigger antibiotic resistance.

Vaccine production

Our cGMP manufactured pharmaceutical grade CTAB (Cetrimonium Bromide) is a powerful cationic surfactant, that can be used in vaccine downstream processing in both bacterial and viral vaccines.
