Workflow for Qualitative Identification of Donkey-Hide Gelatin

Donkey-hide gelatin (Asini Corii Colla), also known as Ejiao in Chinese, is a popular gelatinous Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) derived from a complex extraction procedure. It has been utilized as an important therapy product to optimize immune response, improve metabolic balance, and treat gynecological diseases for centuries. It is commonly used as a tonic medicine in TCM clinics.

In 2012, the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (ChP) Commission promulgated the supplementary test method for the quality of bovine hide in donkey-hide gelatin. ChP 2015 revised the qualitative method of donkey-hide gelatin, and an LC/MS/MS method was used to detect the characteristic peptide, which was more scientific based and reliable.
